A Message from VIA’s Executive Director

Dear VIA volunteers and friends,

As we enter into a new and exciting season of preparing our newest VIA participants for Asia and for our Stanford summer programs, our thoughts turn to VIA in the future, and the changes we seek to implement to ensure VIA will continue providing the quality programs, the personal support, and enriching opportunities you have experienced. I want to share some thoughts on VIA in the future, and to assure you that VIA will continue providing the quality programs, the personal support, and enriching opportunities you have experienced.

As you know, VIA recently has gone through a lengthy strategic review process to evaluate VIA’s unique role in the 21st Century. When completed [hopefully by June 15, 2010], we will share what the Board envisions for VIA in potential new programs and new opportunities, while retaining VIA’s core values.

You likely will have noticed the recent three job openings on the VIA website.  The upcoming departures of Kirsten as Finance and Admin Director and Anjali as China Program Director are indeed challenging transitions for the organization.  Both have been with VIA for years, have a deep commitment to the volunteers and programs, very skilled at what they do, and have helped make VIA what it is today. We will deeply miss both of them, but are optimistic about the contributions new VIA staff will also bring to the organization.

The third position we are hiring is a new addition to the Asia team. The need for a Senior Asia Program Director has been identified by the Program Directors as a necessary improvement on how VIA Asia Programs are managed and supported.  Providing over-arching strategic structure on programs, the Senior Asia Director will help VIA build stronger programs, better support partners and seek to develop Asia Program-wide policies.

VIA is at an exciting stage of its growth and development.  Knowing that from afar it’s difficult to follow all the possible new directions for VIA, please feel free to contact me with your thoughts, comments, and questions.

-Michael
